New Server: OptiPlex 7040 SFF

Two days ago, I reached out to someone on Craigslist about another computer; something to turn into a second Linux server. Today, I got my hands on a Dell OptiPlex 7040 for $75. (I kind of regrete not taking the monitor that they were offering with it for an even $100.)

This is a pretty good system, not just for a Linux server, but for a machine to run Windows on if I decided to. But I’m going the server route. Intel Core i5-6600, 16 GB of RAM, and a 1TB HDD, plus an expansion for an M.2 SSD. This is my new testing server. Something that I can use to play around with and further learn Linux and Ubuntu Server on without accidentally breaking my web server.

I’ve been wanting to test out TrueNAS and Proxmox, but wasn’t able to run it on the HP that my current server is running on. So I’ll be testing that out on this. But also, in anticipation of getting my hands on this system, and just having a second system to play with and needing to connect it to my router/network, I ordered a 2.5G Ethernet switch that showed up yesterday. I’m getting a little too deep into this now.
